Tourism cannot be the only economic driver to The Southeast Shore

Idyllic sunsets. Fun golf carts. New brews. Yummy burgers. Sandy toes. Slower everything.

These images, and more, describe summers on The Southeast Shore. The Summer of 2019 is showing us that Mother Nature always wins. She dictates the type of summer we have to enjoy, but she also predicts the type of economic season local business owners will experience. Many small businesses and families rely on the summer season to make THE bulk, if not all of their revenue for the year. 10 weeks.  For the last few years, this has been the norm.

But we think it’s time to diversify.  The Southeast Shore is geographically positioned within a 2 hour drive of Chicago, St. Joseph, Benton Harbor, Kalamazoo and Ann Arbor. It’s located in the heart of agriculture, skilled trades and various bodies of water. Can you imagine the partnerships and collaboration that can be utilized between communities, companies and institutions like:

  • University of Chicago

  • Lake Michigan College

  • Southwestern Michigan College

  • The Kellogg Company

  • Western Michigan University

  • Kalamazoo College

  • Grand Valley State University

  • Whirlpool Corporation

  • Stryker

  • University of Michigan

  • Four Winds Casino

  • Blue Chip Casino

  • Dwyer Instruments

..this is just the tip of the iceberg. When the area has a solid, cross-municipal  economic development plan, we can tap into these resources for growth, followed by training and then jobs. This is then followed by the ability for families to live here year-round without relying only on tourism and/or limited positions in area companies.

We can do this.  Email us if you agree. hello @ thesoutheastshore . com
