The Duo Behind Union Pier's Black Currant Bakehouse


There is something magical about walking into a bakery. As a kid, I grew up in a community of bakers and small business owners. My Baba and Dedo ran a hamburger diner. I've always felt the most comfortable in these little spaces, early in the morning, prepping the goods and waiting for customers to roll in. This is what I felt when I visited Black Currant Bakehouse's owners, Jesse and Katie.


Based in Union Pier, Black Currant is focused on community, good ingredients and making you happy - really. Katie grew up coming to Harbor Country as a kid. She fell in love with baking in college, spent some time in Portland, meeting her main squeeze and business partner, Jesse. Lucky for us, they decided to open shop down the road.

You may not 'think' about pre-ordering your donuts or breakfast sandwiches, but think twice. Harbor Country's population almost triples in the summer months. This means that vacationers and second home owners are here in full force (Welcome, by the way!).I've seen lines at Black Currant AND Katie confirmed that sometimes they will run out of donuts. This is the reality of a good product, friends. So, what to do?


If you know you will be visiting or rolling in a week, call ahead and pre-order your goodies. This way, Black Currant will ensure you have your pastries and sad faces won't appear when the kids get to the counter and their favorite sprinkled sweets are out.
