There is something magical about walking into a bakery. As a kid, I grew up in a community of bakers and small business owners. My Baba and Dedo ran a hamburger diner. I've always felt the most comfortable in these little spaces, early in the morning, prepping the goods and waiting for customers to roll in. This is what I felt when I visited Black Currant Bakehouse's owners, Jesse and Katie.
Based in Union Pier, Black Currant is focused on community, good ingredients and making you happy - really. Katie grew up coming to Harbor Country as a kid. She fell in love with baking in college, spent some time in Portland, meeting her main squeeze and business partner, Jesse. Lucky for us, they decided to open shop down the road.
Highlights of why we think you should make Black Currant a year round stop (many businesses in town take breaks over the winter, so be sure to check with BC to confirm when their shut down takes place...but rest assured we will also let you know). day, so if you want to get in on the wedding goods, we at HCL suggest you contact Black Currant now. Pro Tip #2: September in Harbor Country is as picturesque as you'ret thinking, with weddings left and right. So yes, book now:).

The bakery is vegetarian
There are gluten options
Ingredients are locally sourced
If you are from Chicago and know what an 'Atomic Cake' is, they can make this, along with a whole other types of goodies you request
Pre-orders are encouraged - really!
You may not 'think' about pre-ordering your donuts or breakfast sandwiches, but think twice. Harbor Country's population almost triples in the summer months. This means that vacationers and second home owners are here in full force (Welcome, by the way!).I've seen lines at Black Currant AND Katie confirmed that sometimes they will run out of donuts. This is the reality of a good product, friends. So, what to do?
If you know you will be visiting or rolling in a week, call ahead and pre-order your goodies. This way, Black Currant will ensure you have your pastries and sad faces won't appear when the kids get to the counter and their favorite sprinkled sweets are out.
Thank you to Katie and Jesse for letting us squeeze in some chats during your morning prep. We are glad you are here! But, my hips would say otherwise.
